ELM Description:
The Constitutive photomorphogenesis protein COP1 was first identified by plant genetics to be involved in light-controlled development. COP1 is a ring finger protein and has now been shown to have ubiquitin ligase activity in both the plant and mammalian context. Proteins controlled by plant COP1 include PIF3, HY5 and LAF1. In animals COP1 has been shown to regulate destruction of p53 and interact with Jun/AP-1.

o Abstract
COP1 is a negative regulator of photomorphogenic development in Arabidopsis thaliana. It cooperates with COP9 signalosome promoting degradation of positive regulators like HY5. Mammalian homologues were identified. Recently the human ortholog, huCOP1, was characterised and it has been shown that interacts with members of JUN family, namely c-jun and junD. All COP1 interacting partners share a conserved motif consisting of a short stretch of negatively charged residues followed by the sequence VP[DE]. It has been demostrated that COP1 recognised the motif via its WD40 repeats domain. Human COP1 seems to regulate AP-1 transcription activity. Relationship between huCOP1 and CSN signalosome (implicated in modulation of AP-1-dependent transcription) has to be tested.
